Executive Functioning Coaching
Executive functioning encompasses a broad range of skills that help students plan, organize, manage their time, begin and complete tasks, regulate attention, remember important information, and work toward goals. Because these skills develop over time and look different from kindergarten through high school, there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
At Connelly Dyslexia and Learning Center, Executive Functioning Skills Coaching is individualized to each student's age, developmental level, strengths, and specific areas of need. Rather than using a single program for every student, our coaches select strategies and supports that are appropriate for the individual learner.
Our approach incorporates evidence-informed strategies and practices from the work of Peg Dawson and Richard Guare, as well as strategies from the Homework, Organization, and Planning Skills (HOPS) Program.
Depending on the student's needs, coaching may address:
• Planning and prioritizing assignments and responsibilities
• Time management and estimating how long tasks will take
• Task initiation and reducing procrastination
• Breaking large assignments and projects into manageable steps
• Working memory strategies
• Attention and sustained effort
• Goal setting and progress monitoring
• Homework and assignment management
• Self-monitoring and developing greater independence
Our goal is not simply to help students get through today's assignments, but to explicitly teach strategies they can learn to use independently at school, at home, and in everyday life.
Social Skills
Our small group social skills instruction provides a supportive, structured environment where students with autism and other social-learning differences can learn, practice, and strengthen skills for navigating everyday social situations.
Through explicit instruction, modeling, guided practice, role playing, games, and group activities, students have opportunities to develop such skills as:
*Starting, joining and maintaining conversations
*Understanding social cues ad different perspectives
*Taking turns and participating in group activities
*Building and maintaining friendships
*Expressing needs and advocating for themselves
*Developing confidence in social situations
